Claudia Strauss is a professor of anthropology at Pitzer College in Claremont, California. She received her Ph.D. in social anthropology from Harvard and in the ensuing two decades has focused on the areas of psychological anthropology, culture theory, American political culture, and discourse analysis. In her latest book, Making Sense of Public Opinion: American Discourses about Immigration and Social Programs, Strauss draws on extensive in-person interviews to explore the formation of American beliefs about social policy issues such as immigration and economic fairness. Her current research examines the life stories and political outlooks of unemployed Southern Californians.
